An American food woman called out her reluctant dining companions after visiting one of Johannesburg’s most adventurous restaurants. Joy, who posts under the handle @joykingeatdrinkride on TikTok, shared a video on 3 August 2026 documenting her experience at Carnivore Restaurant in the West Rand.
The restaurant specialises in grilling game meat, serving dishes that include zebra, kudu, steenbok and antelope alongside more familiar options. Joy compared it to a Brazilian churrascaria, but with a wild twist suited to the South African safari experience.

While Joy was eager to dig in, others at her table were far less enthusiastic. She described the awkward dynamic of sitting at dinner while companions turned down dish after dish. Despite the reluctance around her, she pushed ahead and tried nearly everything, including antelope sausage, pork sausage and, most notably, zebra.

Joy described the antelope as “hands down one of my favourite pieces” and admitted she had never considered zebra as something people could eat before that evening. Her verdict on the zebra was honest: she found it a little tough but was glad she gave it a go. As a self-described “ultimate foodie,” she made clear that refusing food simply was not an option for her.
