An American tourist visiting Cape Town left the internet buzzing after stumbling upon a community most locals have never met. Coco, who goes by @cocoboothe on TikTok, shared a multi-part series on 23 August 2026 introducing her followers to what she called the “Mountain People” of Cape Town.

The videos featured a woman and her family who identify as Khoisan, one of the oldest Indigenous groups in Southern Africa. According to Coco’s caption, the Khoisan people have a heritage in the region stretching back tens of thousands of years, making them among the earliest lineages of modern humans on Earth.

Cape Town’s mountain community

During the visit, the Khoisan woman told Coco that her community lives inside the mountains surrounding Cape Town, only coming down to the city when necessary before returning to the mountain they call home. She also shared knowledge passed down through generations, including traditional beliefs about healing and claims that certain illnesses, cancer among them, could be treated through their methods.
