EAST LONDON — A video of Vuyokazi Gana, a 52-year-old deputy school principal from East London, weeping during a court appearance has gone viral on social media, reigniting public outrage over her human trafficking case.
The clip, shared on X by @IamSiyaZA on 22 August 2026, shows Gana standing at the dock with her head bowed, visibly emotional, as proceedings continued around her. The footage was originally filmed during a March 2026 court appearance at the East London Magistrate's Court, where her case was formally transferred to the High Court.
Gana's case and charges
Gana was arrested in October 2025 by the Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit. Prosecutors allege she lured young women and girls, some as young as 16, from towns including Qumbu, Mthatha, and Ngqeleni with promises of a better future. She allegedly housed them at her property in Quigney, East London, and forced them into sex work, charging clients between R250 and R300 per night.

The transfer to the High Court allows the State to finalise and serve the formal indictment on her legal team. Prosecutors also indicated the postponement created room to investigate potential accomplices, as investigators believe Gana may have formed part of a wider human trafficking network.
Her multiple bail applications have been unsuccessful. The East London Magistrate's Court initially refused bail, and a subsequent appeal to the Makhanda High Court was also dismissed on the grounds of witness intimidation risk and public interest. She has remained in custody since her arrest.
The Eastern Cape Department of Education acknowledged it had been unable to formally serve Gana with internal suspension and disciplinary papers because of her incarceration, meaning she technically remained on the payroll despite being behind bars.
