LIMPOPO — The Polokwane Magistrate's Court heard on Wednesday that Charlotte Tibana, the first accused in a deceased estate fraud case, allegedly made contact with a senior police officer in an effort to shut down the investigation against her before charges were laid.
State witness Constable Thobejane took the stand during bail opposition proceedings against Tibana and her co-accused, Tshwane Metro Police Department officer Peter Nonyane, who is also her partner. Thobejane testified that Tibana reached out to his commanding officer, then Lieutenant-Colonel Makoa, after becoming aware that she was the subject of a police investigation.
According to his testimony, Tibana requested a meeting with Makoa with the apparent intention of having the matter dropped before it progressed further.
R4 million fraud allegations
The couple faces multiple charges relating to the alleged defrauding of three separate deceased estate accounts. Prosecutors allege the offences took place between 2024 and 2026, with the total amount involved exceeding R4 million.

In addition to the estate fraud allegations, the state contends that Tibana and Nonyane attempted to acquire a luxury vehicle valued at R1.7 million by falsely presenting themselves as beneficiaries of one of the estates. Thobejane's testimony formed part of the state's argument opposing bail for both accused, with prosecutors citing the alleged interference as one of the grounds for their continued detention.
