LIMPOPO — A Tshwane Metro Police Department officer and his wife, an attorney, have been arrested on money laundering charges linked to funds allegedly siphoned from two deceased estates, totalling more than R3 million.

According to TimesLIVE, Peter Nonyane and Charlotte Tibana appeared before the Polokwane Magistrate's Court after being taken into custody separately. Nonyane was arrested in Pretoria, while Tibana was apprehended in Polokwane. Both remained in custody ahead of their scheduled bail hearing.

How the dealership triggered the investigation

The case came to light after staff at a Pretoria vehicle dealership grew suspicious about a transaction used to purchase a R1.65 million Mercedes-Benz AMG G63. When Nonyane was unable to account for the origin of the funds, dealership officials reported the matter to the Hawks.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority, Tibana had acted as executor of the two estates in question and allegedly used that position to authorise unlawful transfers from estate accounts. The NPA states that R1.75 million was withdrawn from one of those accounts. On 28 October 2024, funds were moved into an FNB account, after which payments of R1.65 million and R100,000 were directed to the dealership to complete the vehicle purchase.

Internal probe launched against Nonyane

The Tshwane Metro Police Department confirmed it had opened an internal disciplinary investigation into Nonyane following his arrest, with a potential suspension under consideration while both internal and criminal proceedings continue. NPA spokesperson Mashudu Malabi said the case demonstrated the value of cooperation between law enforcement agencies when pursuing complex financial crimes.

Malabi added that the investigation served to protect estate beneficiaries from financial misconduct by those entrusted with administering estates. The state has demonstrated its zero-tolerance for similar crimes when it found a lawyer in the Western Cape guilty of stealing millions from deceased estates.
