Spring Day celebrations in Refilwe, Cullinan, turned deadly on Tuesday, 1 September 2026, when a young man lost his life following a violent confrontation.
Tshepang Nyathi, 21, was fatally stabbed during what had started as a lighthearted Spring Day celebration. A group of young people were marking the occasion by splashing water on pedestrians passing through the area, a common informal tradition on the first day of spring.
The situation took a fatal turn when the group attempted to drench a 53-year-old man, who allegedly reacted by pulling out a knife and stabbing Nyathi before fleeing. Nyathi was rushed to a nearby medical facility, where he was declared dead.
Community members in the area tracked down the alleged perpetrator a short distance from where the stabbing occurred. They confronted and assaulted him before police arrived and took him into custody. The suspect was taken to a medical facility for treatment before being formally placed under arrest.
