GAUTENG - The National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Andy Mothibi has given Parliament a firm assurance that those responsible for corruption at Tembisa Hospital will be held accountable.
The head of the National Prosecuting Authority made the admission before Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) on Tuesday, 19 August 2026. During his appearance before the committee, Mothibi was pressed by members on why businessman Hangwani Morgan Maumela continues to walk free despite the seizure of more than R300 million in assets linked to his alleged syndicate.
Maumela first came under scrutiny after whistleblower Babita Deokaran flagged suspicious transactions linked to the Tembisa Hospital procurement scandal before her assassination in 2021. His alleged connections to a web of front companies implicated in siphoning healthcare funds, and his ties to President Cyril Ramaphosa, have made him a much-talked-about figure.

The Hawks are actively investigating Maumela
Addressing questions about the businessman, the NDPP confirmed that Maumela's case remains under active investigation, with the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks, leading the criminal probe.
During Mothibi's tenure as head of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), investigators uncovered alleged fraudulent dealings between Maumela and the Gauteng Department of Health totalling approximately R800 million.
In July 2026, the High Court granted an order authorising the seizure of assets exceeding R300 million from the Maumela syndicate, including a fleet of luxury vehicles that drew considerable public attention.
Despite the seizures, Maumela has never been charged or arrested. But Mothibi assured Parliament that action would be taken.
"We are dealing with it decisively. We are leaving no stone unturned. So, we want to make sure we leave nothing to chance," he said.
