WESTERN CAPE - The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has confirmed that the case against suspended National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola is among the matters currently under active review.

This was confirmed by NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago on Wednesday, 19 August 2026, while speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the authority's appearance before the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA).

As part of the NPA’s reviews into IDAC investigations, the case against Crime Intelligence head Dumisani Khumalo and six others has been withdrawn.

Masemola’s case currently under review

Speaking about IDAC cases under review, Kganyago said Crime Intelligence cases are currently at the front of the review queue, with Masemola's matter included in that grouping.

“We indicated that we are going to look at all the cases, as part of the reset of IDAC. Therefore, we're talking about more than 40 cases, but at the moment the matters of Crime Intelligence are the ones that are being reviewed as we speak, including the one of the National Commissioner Masemola," Kganyago said.

Masemola faces four counts of contravening the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), specifically relating to his duties as the South African Police Service (SAPS) accounting officer in connection with the Medicare24 health and wellness services tender.

The charges centre on allegations of gross negligence, including failures to prevent unauthorised or irregular expenditure, to ensure proper screening and tax compliance of the service provider, and to take disciplinary action against implicated SAPS supply-chain officials.

He is not charged with corruption, fraud, or money laundering. Masemola has denied all allegations of wrongdoing.

How did South Africans react?

Public reaction to the NPA's update was swift, with several social media users expressing frustration at the pace of proceedings.

Thami Jola KaMdingi wrote:

"Hurry up, NPA. This is urgent. We want General Masemola back at work urgently."

Mpumi Ngcobo added:

"They must finalise this quickly and remove that imposter who is acting."

Zamokuhle Zamo Mtolo echoed the sentiment, posting:

"They must work faster on this matter."

Nhlanhla Nene wrote:

"And General Dimpane must be investigated."

Emma Mwandila simply stated:

"Bring back Masemola."
