WESTERN CAPE — Hours after residents of Riemvasmaak's Phumlani Village gathered in prayer for missing eight-year-old Anovuyo Oncke on Monday, 7 September 2026, a grim discovery was made.

Anovuyo, a Grade 1 learner at Perivale Primary School, was last seen on the morning of 6 September 2025 after leaving home at approximately 7 am. She was wearing black pants and a pink pyjama top at the time of her disappearance.

As residents gathered to pray for her to mark the anniversary of her disappearance, screams rang out in the area after what appeared to be human bones were discovered near a shack that community members had previously flagged to police as suspicious.

Bones and bloodstained dress found at the scene

Alongside what appeared to be bones, a bloodstained dress and a bloody padlock were also found at the location. Anovuyo's mother was present and confirmed the dress did not belong to her daughter.

Community worker Beryl Williams, speaking at the scene, urged residents not to draw conclusions before forensic results were available. Western Cape Provincial police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala confirmed that bones had been found but cautioned against assumptions.

"Police opened an inquest docket for investigation. At this stage, we cannot confirm that it is human remains or that the bones are of the missing child. A forensic examination will be conducted," Gwala said.

Shack linked to earlier sexual assault case

The shack where the items were found had been reported to police more than three months before the latest discovery. Residents said that they suspected that the man who previously occupied that dwelling may have information related to Anovuyo's disappearance.

The individual had earlier been found holding a 16-year-old girl against her will; that teenager was assaulted and raped. The suspect fled and has not been arrested.

Community members expressed frustration that police had not acted sooner, and some noted that requests for sniffer dogs made the day after Anovuyo went missing were not met.

"SAPS have lots to answer. The community asked for support. How could they not bring in search dogs? The alleged perpetrator should have been arrested by now. Was Anovuyo's life worth so little?"

"The very next day after she went missing, WCMPU and other organisations were there requesting dogs. Unfortunately our request fell on deaf ears."

"Please can we have a Missing Person Task Team that will have sniffer dogs and investigators who can profile and track certain individuals. Every day people go missing. Why?"
