WESTERN CAPE — The Southern Cape Police's Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit is investigating the disappearance of 17-year-old George teenager Sarah Rose Starrett, who was last seen on Sunday, 19 July, in Maitland Street, Blanco.
As the investigation progresses, a video linked to the missing teenager has been circulating widely across social media platforms. According to the George Herald, Warrant Officer Chris Spies, spokesperson for the Southern Cape Police, confirmed that authorities are aware of the footage but said investigators are unable to comment on its authenticity, as doing so could compromise the active probe.
Trusted source verifies the video
Despite the police's position, a source described as trusted told the George Herald that the video is genuine and was recorded before Sarah turned 17 in June this year. In the footage, a teenage girl who identifies herself as Sarah speaks about her experiences after she was placed in the system in 2021, voicing deep distrust of the courts, government, and welfare institutions.

The same source confirmed that Sarah had dyed her hair dark approximately three weeks before her disappearance. This means her current appearance differs significantly from photographs used in the initial missing-person notices circulated by police and members of the public.

Online reports have suggested that Sarah's disappearance may not have been spontaneous. A Facebook account bearing the name of her mother reportedly published a public post claiming the teenager was safe and asking people to stop looking for her. Spies reiterated that all aspects of the case remain subject to strict investigation and declined to elaborate further on specific details.
Sarah was placed in care in 2021, and her video, if authentic, paints a picture of a young person who felt let down by the systems meant to protect her. Police have not indicated whether any persons of interest have been identified in connection with her disappearance.
