Zodwa Wabantu is done letting people tell her story for her. The Soweto-born entertainer, whose real name is Zodwa Libram, used a recent episode of Moonchild Diaries to set the record straight on rumours that she had fallen on hard times financially.
The 41-year-old revealed that the gossip hit close to home, tracing it back to someone she had trusted.
"She spread lies that I had gone broke just because I asked her to lend me money," Libram said, noting that her so-called friends went as far as distancing themselves from her based on that false narrative.

The dancer was quick to draw a distinction between being broke and investing heavily in her spiritual journey. At the time the rumours were circulating, she had been going through ukuthwasa, the process of training to become a traditional healer after answering an ancestral calling. The costs involved were significant.

Far from viewing that period as a low point, Libram credits the decision to honour her calling as the turning point that changed everything. She says her career has since experienced a major glow-up, with bookings flooding in and a busy December already shaping up on her schedule.
Previously speaking to ZALEBS in 2023, the dancer explained that she had to lower her booking fees to adjust to the economic climate, emphasising that "Everyone is struggling, and the cost of living has gone up."
Rather than retreat from the backlash, she made clear that she has no interest in crafting a perfect public image, describing her commitment to living honestly as a core part of who she is.
