PRETORIA — Crime Intelligence head Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo has declared his readiness to return to full duties after the National Prosecuting Authority withdrew fraud and corruption charges against him and six co-accused at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court.

According to SABC News, the charges arose from the alleged irregular appointment of Brigadier Dineo Mokwele. Khumalo and the six others had been arrested in June last year in connection with that appointment process before the NPA formally brought proceedings to a close by withdrawing all charges.

He acknowledged that the prolonged case had affected wider events in the country and confirmed that he and his team were committed to resuming their public service responsibilities, in line with their careers to date.

Madlanga Commission scrutiny and prior allegations

The withdrawal comes against a backdrop of ongoing scrutiny of Crime Intelligence operations. National Coloured Congress MP Fadiel Adams had previously placed corruption allegations against Khumalo and other senior officers before investigative bodies, and those allegations also featured in proceedings at the Madlanga Commission.

During commission hearings, Adams faced pointed questioning over disputed affidavits and claims he made regarding intercepted dockets. Commission evidence leader Lee Segeels-Ncube challenged Adams on unverified allegations he had submitted to Police Minister Senzo Mchunu. Separately, Professor Brian Williams rejected Adams's assertion that the late Major-General André Lincoln had directed him to pursue criminal cases against police leadership.
