A Johannesburg visitor refused to let a cellphone thief get away in Klerksdorp's CBD, and the whole thing was caught on camera.

The Klerksdorp Record shared dashcam-style footage filmed on OR Tambo Street on 15 September 2026, outside Webbers fashion store. In the clip, a young man is seen flagging down a white minibus taxi and bringing it to a stop. He had been alerted by pedestrians that the person who allegedly stole his phone had jumped into the vehicle.

The victim pulled the suspect out of the taxi, and the confrontation drew immediate attention from bystanders nearby. The taxi crept forward a few metres before stopping again. In a turn that surprised many viewers, another passenger inside the vehicle then handed the stolen phone back to its rightful owner.

The victim was visibly relieved. He apparently told the person who recorded the incident, named Kotze:

"They saw him get into the taxi... I'm so grateful to you guys."

The footage struck a nerve with many South Africans because it reflects a broader struggle with street crime across the country.
