The running community rallied together in extraordinary fashion after the death of Elizabeth "Tsontso" Moselakgomo. A BackaBuddy fundraiser set up for her daughter has raised R338,695, surpassing its R300,000 goal by 13%.
Tsontso was a beloved member of the Reidlee running community in Gauteng. Four suspects were arrested in connection with her murder in Kempton Park, leaving her child and those close to her devastated.
Fellow runner Bonni Suckling reached out to BackaBuddy shortly after Elizabeth's passing to explore how the community could support her young daughter. The campaign, titled "Finish the Race for Tsontso," was organised by Simbulele Jezile and quickly gained momentum, drawing 650 unique donors from across South Africa.

Community opens its heart for Khumo
Among the most notable contributions was a R50,000 donation from Caroline Rupert, made on 2 October 2026 with a simple message:
"With love."
A fitness group based in Paarl, StrongHealthyandHappyPaarl, also donated R1,800 and wrote to Elizabeth's daughter:
"We hope you feel, even in the quietest moments, that her spirit still runs beside you, steady, brave and free."
Other donors left messages of hope and prayer for the little girl, known as Khumo. One anonymous donor wrote:
"Sweet Baby Girl, remember, the Lord will always love you. Keep the beautiful memories of your Mummy dear to your heart."
Another simply said:
"May you continue to run in heaven for your child."
Donations still coming in
The campaign remains open with no set end date. As recently as 20 October 2026, donations were still being made, showing that the generosity sparked by Tsontso's story has not faded.
The outpouring reflects the deep bond that running communities often form, and in this case, that bond extended well beyond the track. Strangers gave what they could to ensure that a child, suddenly without her mother, would not face the future alone.
