South African actress Sannah Mchunu was left heartbroken after watching footage from the funeral service of murdered runner Elizabeth "Tsontso" Moselakgomo, who was laid to rest in Phake, Mpumalanga, on 20 September 2026. The clip that moved Mchunu most was not of the ceremony itself, but of Tsontso's young daughter taking to the stage to say goodbye to her mother.

Surrounded by her classmates, the eight-year-old delivered a speech that left the room in silence. Mchunu shared the footage, writing simply: "That killer is so cruel."

Moselakgomo was a 38-year-old runner and mother from Kempton Park who went missing on 9 September after stepping out of her home for an afternoon jog. It was her eight-year-old daughter who first raised the alarm when her mother did not return. Four days later, on 12 September, her body was found in Rhodesfield.

Her death was not an isolated incident. She was one of nine women whose bodies were discovered in the Ekurhuleni region within a two-month period, a series of killings that shook the country and sparked urgent calls for the police to do more to protect women. The South African running community responded by hosting solidarity and memorial runs across Kempton Park and Johannesburg in her honour.

The public grief following Moselakgomo's murder extended beyond running circles. The case drew widespread condemnation and also ignited a controversy surrounding Podcast and Chill, after co-hosts MacG and Sol Phenduka made jokes about her disappearance. The backlash was swift and severe, and Phenduka later issued a public apology.

For many South Africans, the image of a little girl standing before mourners to bid farewell to a mother she should not have had to lose so soon has become a symbol of the human cost behind the statistics.
