South African teachers with a recognised degree are being actively recruited by the Western Australian Department of Education, which has opened its doors to educators from the country as part of a formal international hiring campaign.

The department runs more than 800 public schools and is looking to fill teaching positions with candidates from South Africa, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, and New Zealand. For South African educators, the opportunity represents one of the few structured pathways to secure employer-sponsored work abroad.

Applicants must hold a completed initial teacher training qualification, either a four-year Bachelor of Education or an undergraduate degree followed by an approved postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE). Fast-track teaching certificates such as the British Qualified Teacher Status are not accepted on their own.

Before stepping into a classroom in Western Australia, candidates must also register with the Teachers Registration Board of Western Australia. That process involves submitting verified degree transcripts, a police clearance certificate, and proof of supervised teaching practice.

Salaries that overtake local pay

The financial package on offer is one of the most competitive in the global education market. Entry-level teachers start at just over 88,000 Australian dollars a year, which translates to roughly one million rand. More experienced educators can earn upwards of 137,000 Australian dollars annually. The package also includes regional living allowances and 12 weeks of paid school holiday leave each year.

For South African teachers earning a fraction of that at home, the offer is difficult to ignore.

The campaign, however, shines a light on a growing concern within South Africa's own education system. The country continues to face critical shortages of qualified teachers, particularly in mathematics, natural sciences, and foundation-phase literacy. The South African Council for Educators regularly processes letters of professional standing for teachers leaving the country, a quiet but steady indicator of how many educators are heading for the exit.
