Kaizer Chiefs Linked With Former Mamelodi Sundowns Coach As Pressure Mounts on Fernando da Cruz

  • Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly reopened talks with Manqoba Mngqithi following his departure from Tanzanian club Young Africans
  • An Amakhosi insider revealed that discussions are ongoing behind the scenes, but Mngqithi has raised concerns about the current technical setup at Naturena
  • The development comes after Kaizer Chiefs were eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup by Red Arrows last weekend

Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly in discussions with free-agent coach Manqoba Mngqithi, according to a leading Amakhosi insider, as pressure mounts on current head coach Fernando Da Cruz following a disappointing continental exit.

Insider Innocent Mkhize shared the development on X, stating that talks are already taking place but that Mngqithi has reservations about working alongside the existing technical team at Naturena. "Amakhosi are back to MANQOBA MNQITHI. Based on what im hearing now is that talks are already taking place behind the scenes but Manqoba doesn't want current technical team," Mkhabela said on X.

This is not the first time the 55-year-old Umzimkhulu-born tactician has been linked with the Soweto giants. Mngqithi previously confirmed that he held advanced discussions with Amakhosi before the start of the current season, before the club ultimately opted to appoint Da Cruz in July.

Mngqithi has spoken candidly about those earlier talks. "Kaizer Chiefs did have interest in me. But someone blocked the move and I know who it is," he said. "I have had very cordial talks with Chiefs, even with Kaizer Motaung Sn. It is not a lie. But it never reached any fruition because there are people who block these moves."

He added that the interest from the club stretches back further still. "Kaizer Chiefs even wanted me before I joined Sundowns. I've had very cordial talks with senior Kaizer Motaung. I know they have always shown interest in me. But for whatever reason it never happened."

The renewed pursuit of Mngqithi follows Kaizer Chiefs' elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup at the hands of Red Arrows last weekend. Da Cruz has not yet lost a league match since taking charge, but the club's overall performances have done little to inspire confidence among supporters and stakeholders.

Mngqithi entered the market last weekend after parting ways with Tanzanian Premier League side Young Africans, making him immediately available should Amakhosi formalise their interest.
