South Africans holding recognised qualifications may no longer need to go through formal skill evaluations when applying for residency in New Zealand, thanks to a significant update to the country's immigration policy.
Immigration New Zealand has revised its List of Qualifications Exempt from Assessment ahead of the Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa reopening. The updated list names seven countries and territories whose qualifications will bypass the standard assessment process: Hong Kong, Ireland, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
South Africa the only African nation on the list
South Africa's inclusion is particularly notable because it is the only country on the African continent to make the cut. While applicants from other African nations must still navigate the full qualification assessment process, South Africans holding eligible credentials can move through the residency application process more quickly.

The revised list also introduced a new "qualification type" field for each entry. This change makes it easier for applicants to identify exactly which credentials qualify for an exemption. Qualifications that did not align with the updated criteria were removed as part of a comprehensive review of the existing list.
Age and partnership visa changes
Immigration New Zealand also revised age requirements across nine partnership-based visa categories. For couples applying for residency on the basis of their relationship, the required 12-month cohabitation period only begins once both partners have turned 18. This means applicants must generally be at least 19 years old before they can qualify under these categories.
The changes are designed to bring greater clarity to the immigration process and reduce delays for applicants whose qualifications meet the revised standards.
