The couple's trip turned sour when her partner James had his necklace ripped off his neck while the two were walking from Sea Point to the Cape Town CBD. She admitted the incident was avoidable and returned from the trip determined to help other travellers not repeat the same errors.

The content creator known as @sheroamstheglobe_ gave a first warning: leave all jewellery at home, or lock it in a safe before heading out. She acknowledged the embarrassment of knowing this rule before arriving but forgetting to apply it. The necklace James was wearing cost them dearly.

Her second tip was to avoid walking long distances, particularly between neighbourhoods. Taking an Uber instead of a half-hour stroll, she said, is simply not worth the risk for the sake of a few pounds.

The third piece of advice was to research your accommodation carefully before booking. She and James stayed in Sea Point and felt comfortable in the area, and she named Sea Point, Green Point, Camps Bay, Clifton, and the V&A Waterfront as areas that are generally considered safer. She urged visitors to read reviews and pay close attention to advice from locals.

Despite everything, she was clear that the robbery did not define the trip. Cape Town, she said, is stunning and the couple still made the most of their time there. Watch the video that sparked the conversation:
