A South African fitness coach is helping sweet-toothed locals make smarter snack choices, and her video is resonating with thousands of people across the country.

Michaela Mallett, who runs the Instagram account @betterwithbalance and coaches women on building confidence through balanced living, filmed herself in her kitchen on 12 August 2026, holding up chocolate bar wrappers one by one to reveal which South African favourites fall under the 200-calorie mark.

SA chocolate bars with low calories

The list kicked off with a Wonder Bar at just 120 calories, followed by a Canderel bar at 127 calories. A Choco Wafer came in at 140 calories, while the Dipped Flake landed at 150 calories. Mallett admitted she would "sell an organ" for a lifetime supply of the Dipped Flake, making clear it was one of her personal highlights.

Five bars tied at 185 calories each: Caramel Dairy Milk, Marshmallow Bar, Crunchie, Turkish Delight, and Smarties. Rounding out the list at 197 calories was the Tex bar, which she described as her chocolate of choice which she said was "worth every bite."

Why the List Matters for Snack Lovers

Nutrition guidance generally places a healthy sweet snack between 150 and 200 calories. Anything above 250 to 300 calories starts to edge closer to a small meal in terms of energy. Sweet snacks tend to be low in protein and fibre, meaning they digest quickly and can leave you hungry again soon after, making calorie awareness especially useful when choosing between options.

Mallett, who has 186,000 followers on Instagram and focuses on helping women move away from binge eating towards food freedom, teased that a similar breakdown for crisps was coming next.
