Tazvi Mhaka, the best friend of the late Zimbabwean businessman Sir Wicknell Chivayo, broke his silence on 2 October 2026 with a deeply personal tribute posted by DandaroOnline on X. The message remembers Wicknell, who died in a tragic helicopter crash in Marondera, Zimbabwe, as a man who left the world having given everything he had.

Mhaka described his friend's story as one of bold dreams and genuine impact, a true rags-to-riches journey whose greatest currency was never money but the lives he transformed along the way.

A life that poured into others

In his tribute, Mhaka reflected on the weight of Chivayo's 45 years, saying that some people live to 100 and leave little behind, while his friend packed a century's worth of dreams and impact into fewer than five decades. He wrote that Chivayo "came, lived, gave and conquered," and promised to keep his vision alive.

Mhaka also drew on a Shona proverb, "Rufu Harusekanwi," meaning death is an appointment none of us can escape, to frame his message around what truly matters: not the length of a life but what it leaves behind. He said Chivayo had changed games, raised bars and opened doors, and that great people never truly die because they live on through the hearts they touched.

Zimbabweans react with mixed feelings

The reactions reflect just how polarising Chivayo's life and legacy remain in Zimbabwe, with some mourning a man they saw as an inspiration and others unwilling to separate the tribute from the controversy that surrounded him. The tribute prompted strong and divided responses from Zimbabweans online.

"I beg to differ. What exactly did he conquer? What legacy? The man died a horrible death; yes, it was not his plan to have died that way, but that was definitely God's plan, to remind his people who the 'Ancient of days' really is."
