An Italian man visiting South Africa got far more than the sunshine he bargained for when a hailstorm rolled in on 14 July 2026.

The couple behind the TikTok account @thebiancos posted the clip with a caption that said it all:

"He came for the sunshine... not hail ☀️."

But rather than ducking for cover, the Italian visitor did the opposite. He bolted outside shirtless, sprinting into the downpour to collect as many hailstones as he could carry, then raced back up the stairs to proudly show off his icy haul. The grin on his face said everything.

Italy does get hail

What made viewers even more curious was whether hail was such a foreign concept to him. Italy does experience hail, particularly in the northern regions of Lombardy, Veneto, and Emilia-Romagna, where violent summer thunderstorms can produce hailstones exceeding 10 centimetres.

The Po Valley is considered one of Europe's most active zones for severe hail. So his delight was less about never having seen ice fall from the sky and more about the sheer joy of experiencing a South African storm firsthand.

Mzansi reacts to the hail run

South Africans flooded the comments section with laughter and nostalgia:

@Kwena Kgabo said:

"It's so refreshing to see people from other countries experience our rain/hail with such glee, reminds me of when we hosted the G20 summit, and visitors were amazed by our rain 😂"

@Makhosi Zinhle joked:

"Even God knows we like to have a good time, so he sends us free ice for our drinks 😄"

@Her Excellency admitted:

"I'm 50 years old and I still eat hail! 🤣 My grandma once told me that as the first-born child, I have power over the weather."

For many South Africans, the video was a reminder of how something completely ordinary at home can look like pure magic through someone else's eyes.
