SAWS Forecasts Warmer Week for South Africa After Brutal Cold Front and Heavy Snow

  • A dominant high-pressure system is set to drive fine and significantly warmer conditions across most of South Africa this week
  • Temperatures in the central and eastern interior are climbing into the mid-to-high 20s after last week's bitter freezing conditions and heavy snowfalls
  • Isolated showers are still expected along coastal districts, with low-pressure systems set to trigger localised shifts mid-week

SOUTH AFRICA — South Africans can expect a considerable improvement in weather conditions this week, following the cut-off low and cold front that battered large parts of the country last week with freezing temperatures, heavy snowfall, and icy rain.

Regions including Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape bore the brunt of the severe system. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) now confirms that a dominant surface high-pressure system is taking control across most of the country, ushering in fine, stable, and warmer weather.

Across the central and eastern interior, temperatures are climbing into the mid-to-high 20s (°C). The northern interior is expected to warm up further as spring conditions strengthen throughout the week.

The high-pressure system will maintain fine and settled weather over the majority of the interior for most of the period. However, low-pressure systems developing over the western interior on Wednesday and Friday will introduce minor, localised atmospheric disruptions. Separately, weak cold fronts tracking south of the coastline are forecast to produce isolated showers along the southern and eastern shores, keeping those coastal districts noticeably cooler than inland areas.

Day-by-day outlook for the week

Monday brings fine and warm to cool conditions across most of the country. The main exception is the southwestern region, where partly cloudy skies and isolated showers are expected along the Western Cape west coast. By Tuesday, partly cloudy conditions will spread further south, with light, isolated showers anticipated along the southwestern Western Cape coast.

KwaZulu-Natal's south coast is also likely to see some shower activity by Tuesday evening. For the rest of the week, the dominant high-pressure system is expected to keep conditions largely dry and warm across the interior, offering a welcome contrast to the harsh conditions that gripped much of the country just days ago.
