More than five years after 22-year-old Anele "Nellie" Tembe fell to her death from the 10th floor of Cape Town's Pepperclub Hotel, the formal inquest into what happened that night is back before the courts. Proceedings resumed at the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on 7 September 2026, drawing renewed public attention to the circumstances surrounding the death of the woman who was engaged to rapper Kiernan "AKA" Forbes at the time.
Tembe died in April 2021. The National Prosecuting Authority initially chose not to prosecute following a review of police investigations and forensic reports, but the case was later returned for further investigation before being formally enrolled as an inquest.
What the witness told the court
According to News24, testimony from an independent witness who lived near the hotel has emerged as one of the most striking pieces of evidence so far. The man told the court he heard what sounded like an argument between a man and a woman shortly before Tembe's fall, during which he heard a woman shout "leave me alone" and "get away from me". The sounds were followed by wailing and a loud bang that he initially mistook for a gunshot.

The witness went outside and found Tembe on the ground. Believing at first that she had not survived, he then noticed signs of life and contacted emergency services, staying with her until help arrived.
What the inquest aims to establish
The inquest is not a criminal trial but is intended to determine the circumstances of Tembe's death and whether any person may bear responsibility. Six witnesses were subpoenaed for the hearings scheduled between 7 and 9 September, with additional sessions set for 15 and 16 September 2026.
The court is expected to examine a range of evidence, including CCTV footage, cellphone records, police investigations, and forensic expert testimony. Questions have previously been raised about inconsistencies between certain witness accounts and CCTV footage from the night in question. The findings of the inquest could ultimately help shed light on what happened in the moments before and after Tembe's death.
