GAUTENG - A 53-year-old man facing a murder charge for the killing of 21-year-old Tshepang Nyathi withdrew his bail application at the Cullinan Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, 8 September 2026.

The accused, whose identity has not been disclosed by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), allegedly stabbed Nyathi on 1 September 2026 during Spring Day festivities in Refilwe Extension 3.

What happened during the Spring Day celebrations

NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana explained that a group of young people had gathered in the area to mark Spring Day in the customary manner of throwing water on one another and on people passing by.

"While the accused was walking past, it is alleged that the group attempted to pour water on him. He allegedly took out a knife and stabbed the deceased. The deceased was taken to a local clinic, where he later succumbed to his injuries," Mahanjana said.

Following the stabbing, community members confronted and assaulted the accused before he sought medical treatment at Ekangala Hospital, where he was subsequently arrested later that same day. The matter was postponed to 27 October 2026 to allow police to continue their investigations.

Nyathi's family struggles to accept his death

Briefly News reported that the family of Tshepang Nyati broke their silence after his tragic death.

His aunt rushed to the scene and found him bleeding on the floor, with the family struggling to get an ambulance in time.

The family says witnesses told them Tshepang was not even the one who splashed the man with water.
