Family of 21-Year-Old Killed During Spring Day Water Game Struggles To Understand His Death

GAUTENG - A young man's life was cut short during what should have been a joyful Spring Day celebration. Tshepang Nyati, 21, was allegedly stabbed by a 53-year-old neighbour in Refilwe, Cullinan, east of Pretoria, on Monday after the man accused him of splashing him with water during the annual festivities.

Family speaks out

His aunt, Moino Nyathi, told the Sowetan the family was still in shock. She said she rushed to the scene after hearing the news, only to find her nephew collapsed on the floor, bleeding heavily. The family then faced another devastating setback: they could not secure an ambulance in time. A private vehicle eventually took Tshepang to a nearby clinic, where he was declared dead on arrival.

A water game that turned fatal

What made the tragedy even harder for the family to process was what witnesses told them. Moino said other children at the scene indicated that Tshepang had not even been the one who splashed the neighbour.

"Even when you ask the other kids, they said it was not actually Tshepang who splashed the neighbour with water," she said

She added that she is still puzzled at how the neighbour could grab a knife and stab a child in the heart.

"How coud a water game end up with him dead."

Spring Day in South Africa has long been a cherished tradition, with children splashing each other with water to mark the start of spring. In recent years, however, social media videos have shown some participants targeting adults, including commuters heading to work. The trend has drawn criticism from people who feel adults should not be forced to take part.

For the Nyathi family, the debate around Spring Day now carries unbearable weight. Moino said she could not understand how a disagreement over water could cost a young man his life. The family is mourning someone who, by all accounts from those present, was simply celebrating a day meant for joy.

Suspect apprehended by community and police

Briefly News also reported that the 53-year-old suspect was reportedly arrested following the incident. Community members in the area tracked down the alleged perpetrator a short distance from where the stabbing occurred. They confronted and assaulted him before police arrived and took him into custody. The suspect was taken to a medical facility for treatment before being formally placed under arrest.
