SOUTH AFRICA — The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 for parts of the Eastern Cape coast for damaging winds and waves, effective Saturday, 22 August 2026, as the rest of the country braces for a mix of warm inland conditions and isolated coastal disruptions. This was after the country experienced a bitterly cold week recently.
According to SAWS, the weather service's regional forecast outlined conditions across all nine provinces, flagging localised risks in specific districts along the Eastern Cape seaboard. The level 2 warnings cover Joe Gqabi, Chris Hani, Nelson Mandela Bay, Kouga, Ndlambe, and Ngqushwa, where residents may face damage to settlements and hazardous driving conditions.
Coastal navigation is expected to be disrupted along a stretch from Plettenberg Bay to Port Alfred, with the warning extending further north to Kosi Bay. Morning fog and mist are forecast to clear gradually across Mpumalanga and parts of the Eastern Cape during the day.
Fire danger and inland conditions
High fire danger conditions have been flagged for the western Free State, the eastern Northern Cape, and sections of the Eastern Cape, adding pressure on emergency services already monitoring the coastal situation.

Inland provinces are set for largely settled weather. Gauteng, North West, Limpopo, and KwaZulu-Natal can expect fine, warm to hot conditions throughout the day. High to very high UVB sunburn indices have been recorded across these areas, and residents are urged to take appropriate precautions when spending time outdoors. Light evening rain is anticipated along the Western Cape and the south-western coastline, offering some relief to those parts of the country.

El Niño could be the strongest on record
In a related article, Briefly News reported on the intensifying 2026 El Niño event, which has the potential to become one of the strongest recorded since at least 1950. As South Africa braces for significant shifts in rainfall and temperature patterns, the historical implications of such climate anomalies reveal their capacity to devastate agricultural output and threaten water security for millions.
