Broadcaster Anele Mgudlwa is gearing up for round two. The Anele Podcast: Her & Now, produced in partnership with First for Women, is set to return for its second season in September, and Mgudlwa says she is walking into it with sharper instincts and a clearer vision.
Despite being one of South Africa's most recognisable voices, Mgudlwa was reluctant to enter the podcast space for a long time. She felt the market was already crowded and had not yet worked out what her take on it would actually look like.
"I think the reason I'd avoided doing a podcast so much is that I hadn't quite figured out what an Anele podcast is going to be, and I figured it out inside of doing the podcast."
Finding purpose in the Her & Now report
Her decision to come on board was rooted in genuine belief in the project. First for Women's inaugural Her & Now report posed a single question to South African women: "How are you feeling?" That study gave words to experiences many women had quietly carried for years, and the podcast served as a platform to unpack those findings through real personal stories.

The second edition of the report paints a picture of South African women stretched thin by systems that were never built with them in mind. For the veteran broadcaster, the conversations the podcast sparked were just as eye-opening for her as they were for her audience.
"I said yes, because at face value, I am a successful woman, but the podcast allowed me to ask myself a lot of questions that I brush off because I'm successful. Ultimately, success is not what rocks you to bed at night, and you sleep properly, and I was asking myself the difficult questions that allowed me to open up as well."
She has hosted female public figures like Pearl Thusi, Rachel Kolisi, Tumi Morake and Masasa Mbangeni, among others, and said she learnt something new from each of her guests.
Going into season two in September, her focus is simple: listen more, and let the conversation breathe.
