Shebeshxt's Third Bail Bid Postponed After New Legal Team Appointed in Polokwane

Shebeshxt's road back to freedom has hit yet another wall. The Lekompo musician's third bail application was postponed in the Polokwane Magistrate's Court after he brought in a new legal team to handle his defence.

The National Prosecuting Authority confirmed that the postponement was necessary to allow the newly appointed lawyers adequate time to get up to speed with the details of the case. Chauke's previous legal representatives, Advocate Michael Khumalo and Senior Counsel Laurence Hodes, are no longer on his team.

Charges piling up for Chauke

Born Lehlogonolo Katlego Chauke, the musician is currently in custody facing a total of 21 charges. These include four counts of attempted murder, assault, malicious damage to property, as well as illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, a combination that has made the courts reluctant to grant him bail at every turn.

Both previous bail applications and subsequent appeals to the High Court were unsuccessful. Adding to the complexity of his situation, the courts were told that some of the alleged offences took place while Chauke was already out on bail at the time, a detail that has weighed heavily against him in prior hearings.

Next court date set for September

The case is expected to return to the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on Thursday, 10 September 2026, when pre-trial proceedings are scheduled to resume. It remains to be seen whether the new legal team will mount a fresh bail challenge or focus on preparing for the broader trial ahead.

Chauke, widely known by his stage name Shebeshxt, rose to prominence in the Lekompo music scene before his legal troubles thrust him into the spotlight for very different reasons.
