GAUTENG — Alleged learning difficulties became the deciding factor in securing release for 22-year-old Ayanda Dludla, the driver implicated in the fatal scholar transport crash that claimed the lives of 14 children on 19 January 2026.
The Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court set bail at R3,000 on 9 September 2026 after agreeing with arguments by the defence regarding the accused's intellectual limitations. Dludla's lawyers alleged that Dludla’s status as a "slow learner" impaired his judgment of distance, directly contributing to the head-on collision between his minibus and a heavy tipper truck.
What is Dludla charged with?
The state has charged Dludla with 14 counts of murder alongside three counts of attempted murder. Authorities also added charges for reckless driving, driving an unlicensed vehicle, and operating without a valid professional driver's permit—which investigators noted had expired prior to the tragedy.

The judge stated that despite the gravity of the allegations, Dludla presents no risk of absconding, poses no public threat, and is clear to await trial outside custody.
