Anele Mdoda-Mgudlwa is no stranger to keeping it real with her fans, and her latest update from home is no exception. The beloved radio and TV personality has gone public about a week-long water outage hitting her Johannesburg estate, and the cascade of disasters behind it reads like a comedy of errors.

Taking to Instagram on 20 August 2026, Anele painted a chaotic picture of what her neighbourhood has been dealing with.

"No water for 7 days…Guys, my estate is going through it. The water problems had excavators out, and then the excavator was stuck. Then they had to send a TLB to fetch it, then the excavator snapped a power cable, so then some had no power. Then the same excavator snapped the fibre cable, so we are currently in 1902," she wrote, signing off with a plea: "Come fetch us."

On her 947 breakfast show, the presenter gave listeners a glimpse into how her household has been coping. With no running water, her family has been relying on their swimming pool to flush the toilets. "I'm clean. For the record, my vaskom cleans me very well because everyone has been asking. I've got a system, and it works. I'm from the Eastern Cape; I can deal with having nothing."

Johannesburg's ongoing water crisis

Anele is far from alone. Thousands of Johannesburg residents have been battling prolonged water shortages, with ageing infrastructure widely blamed for persistent leaks and equipment failures across the city.

Earlier in February, Premier Panyaza Lesufi found himself under the spotlight during a water crisis briefing after admitting that his own household is not spared from dry taps, revealing that he sometimes has to head to a hotel to bathe before attending to official duties.

For Anele, the Eastern Cape grit she grew up with appears to be seeing her through, vaskom and all.
