WESTERN CAPE - Residents across Milnerton, Table View and Blouberg have been losing sleep over a persistent humming sound in the dead of night. Now the City of Cape Town says it may have a lead.

The municipality has identified sewer maintenance operations as one possible source of the noise after 148 residents came forward with complaints. Ward 113 councillor Sue van der Linde had been gathering reports and audio recordings from affected households through a dedicated WhatsApp line, trying to piece together where the sound was coming from.

City points to late-night sewer work

According to IOL, the City's Water and Sanitation Directorate says it routinely carries out cleaning work at sewer pump stations between midnight and 4am. The timing is deliberate. Sewer flows are at their lowest during those hours, which allows maintenance crews to clean underground chambers called wet wells without risking blockages or overflows.

Specialised vacuum and jetting trucks are used during the cleaning process, and the City acknowledges these vehicles can generate considerable mechanical noise. The municipality described the work as essential preventative maintenance to keep the sewer network running reliably.

Investigation still under way

Despite the explanation, the City has not confirmed the sewer operations are definitively the source. Officials said they would investigate whether current Water and Sanitation activity in the area is connected to the reported noise and whether anything could be done to reduce its impact on nearby residents.

Other possible sources had already been looked into before the City issued its statement. Van der Linde confirmed that the Astron Refinery had been checked and ruled out. Preliminary investigations had also cleared the Potsdam water treatment plant.

Woman reports mysterious sounds coming from her house

New homeowner, Lesedi Murna Selepe shared that after a week of moving into the house, she heard scary sounds coming from the ceiling. In a video she uploaded to her account, Murna showed herself knocking on the corner in the kitchen, which was met with sounds in return.
