Family Fears Leah Moumakoa’s Death May Be Linked to Ekurhuleni Killings

GAUTENG — The family of a woman who was found dead after going for a run is questioning whether her death could be connected to the growing number of women found dead across Ekurhuleni.

Leah Moumakoa, a 44-year-old personal trainer, disappeared after going for a run in Bryanston in June. Her body was discovered on 17 June. Her family has raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding her death and believes more questions need to be answered.

Family questions Leah’s death

According to the Sunday Times, Leah was reportedly found partially naked and badly bruised, raising concerns among her relatives about what happened to her. Her sister, Boitumelo Molenatsi, questioned whether potentially important evidence had been properly investigated.

Molenatsi raised concerns about CCTV cameras in the area and said the family had sought forensic information relating to Leah’s death. The family is also concerned because Leah had reportedly told them that two vehicles were following her while she was out jogging.

As more women have been found dead in Ekurhuleni, Leah's relatives now fear her case could have similarities to the recent killings. Molenatsi said the family had repeatedly pushed for answers from investigators.

“Police have failed us, I don’t want to lie,”she said.

However, there is no confirmation from police that Leah's death is connected to the Ekurhuleni cases, and her family's concerns remain unproven.

More families demand answers

Another family has also raised concerns over the handling of a woman's death. Itumeleng Kekana, 32, disappeared in July after leaving her sister's shop in Kempton Park to meet someone.

Her brother said the family later received information that three men had allegedly tried to sell a cellphone at a local shebeen. The phone reportedly displayed Itumeleng's photograph before it was allegedly formatted.

Her body was found near a bridge in Kempton Park on 2 August. The family has since positively identifies Itumeleg as one of the nine women found.

Families want investigations to go further

The concerns surrounding Leah come as fear continues to grow among communities following the discovery of multiple women's bodies across Ekurhuleni.

Authorities have acknowledged similarities in some of the cases, including the condition in which some victims were found. Police have not, however, confirmed that all the deaths are linked or that they were committed by one person.

Premier says perpetrator has declared war on the state

Briefly News reported that Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has vowed that law enforcement will continue its efforts to track down the person or people behind the killings. Lesufi said the perpetrators 'have declared war' on the state and hey would deploy every resource to bring them to book. The latest victim was found partially clothed in Dawn Park after a passerby reportedly came across her body. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.
