Criminal charges filed after Carrim's no-show
After Carrim failed to appear before the Commission numerous times, citing medical reasons, Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga issued a ruling postponing the continuation of Carrim's evidence to 14 August 2026, with a specific directive that he appear and testify in person on that date.
He then failed to appear on that date. His repeated absences, combined with his ongoing failure to provide the information and documentation required under Regulation 10(6) of the applicable regulations, prompted the Commission to lay criminal charges against him on 19 August 2026 under the Commissions Act (8 of 1947).
In his statement, Michaels said the Commission viewed Carrim's conduct as constituting "one or more offences" under the Act and related regulations.
The Commission expressed its hope that the arrest would serve as a deterrent, stating that it "trusts that Mr Carrim's arrest will send a strong message to any witness who does not take the Commission seriously."
