JOHANNESBURG — A multi-agency law enforcement operation successfully freed a 38-year-old businessman unharmed in Randfontein after he was held captive for over five weeks following an armed abduction in central Johannesburg. The rescue took place less than a month after a former sports presenter was allegedly kidnapped in Gauteng as well.
According to eNCA, the victim was dragged into a vehicle in the Johannesburg CBD on 30 August 2026. Shortly after the abduction, his captors issued a $2-million (R33,371,800.00) ransom demand to his relatives, prompting an immediate investigation by a combined unit comprising Johannesburg Central detectives, Crime Intelligence, the Anti-Kidnapping Team, the Flying Squad, and private security specialists.
The standard operational procedure for South African kidnapping syndicates involves transferring victims between safehouses while routing ransom communications through untraceable mobile units. However, law enforcement intercepted the syndicate on Sunday, 4 October 2026, apprehending three primary suspects who had the mobile phone used to transmit the ransom threats.

The arrest comes days after another suspected serial rapist was taken into custody in KwaZulu-Natal. Both cases unfold amid renewed concern over gender-based violence following the discovery of women’s bodies in Ekurhuleni and Soweto.
