GAUTENG — Convicted murderer and rapist Thabo Bester has dismissed his legal team and chosen to conduct his own defence when his prison escape trial begins at the Free State High Court in April 2027.
The court has scheduled proceedings to run from 19 April to 18 June 2027, close to five years after Bester fled Mangaung Correctional Centre in May 2022. Prosecutors allege that Bester staged his own death by setting fire to his cell and placing the body of Katlego Bereng there as a decoy.
