LIMPOPO — Three serving police officers from the Sekhukhune district were arrested on 7 October 2026 following an investigation into allegations of fraud and corruption within the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo.

The officers, who are attached to police stations across the Sekhukhune district, were seen in handcuffs being escorted by fellow officers near a vehicle at the time of their arrest. SABC News covered the development.

Scheepers warns of zero tolerance for corruption

Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, who was recently appointed, confirmed that the arrests formed part of broader, ongoing investigations into misconduct within the province's police ranks. He made clear that SAPS Limpopo would not tolerate corrupt conduct and that the process was still active.

Public reacts to officers' arrest

The footage attracted significant commentary on social media. Bongani Dinga questioned why the arrested officers were not transported in a police van, writing:

"Why don't they put them in the back of a police van? Is it because they don't want to dirty the uniform? But when they arrest us, we're also clean, even wearing white trousers, yet they put us in the back."

Ellnet Matodzi expressed confidence in the provincial commissioner, saying:

"General Jan Scheepers is going to clean the province."

Lungisa Jikajika was sceptical about the consequences, commenting:

"They will get bail before the end of the day."

Talia Mbhiza offered a blunter assessment:

"We don't have police in SA."

Firoz Cachalia speaks about Sibiya's arrest

In a related article, Briefly News reported on Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia’s response to the arrest of a 59-year-old Lieutenant General facing allegations of grooming a 16-year-old girl and raping an 18-year-old woman. The senior SAPS officer was arrested by the Commissions Recommendations Task Team and was expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court.

The allegations have drawn added attention as South Africa confronts a deepening crisis of gender-based violence and femicide. Cachalia said police must investigate sexual offence allegations without fear or favour, regardless of an officer’s rank.
