LIMPOPO — Six people died on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, after a head-on collision between a South African Police Service vehicle and a civilian bakkie on the R524 Levubu Road in the Vhembe District.

The SAPS vehicle, from Tshilwavhusiku Police Station, was transporting three awaiting-trial prisoners to a correctional facility in Thohoyandou when it struck a white Mahindra bakkie belonging to Tshisimani Water.

Emergency Medical Services attended the scene and certified five people dead on arrival. A sixth fatality was confirmed after a SAPS member, who had sustained serious injuries, was rushed to a local hospital and later succumbed to those injuries.

Three police officers left dead

The dead include three SAPS members, one male and two females, as well as two male awaiting-trial prisoners and the male driver of the civilian vehicle. A third awaiting-trial prisoner survived with serious injuries and was taken to hospital under police guard.

A culpable homicide case has been registered at Makhado Police Station. The identities of those who died will not be disclosed until next of kin have been formally notified.

The Limpopo Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Jan Petrus Scheepers, extended his condolences following the crash.

"We extend our sincere condolences to all the bereaved families, colleagues and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this tragic incident. We also wish the injured a speedy recovery," he said.
