Cameron Waldeck-Cooks’ Brother Reacts to Claims That Ethan Coetzee Was Jealous and Controlling

  • Cameron Waldeck-Cooks' brother reposted a TikTok video detailing reports that her boyfriend, Ethan Coetzee, was jealous and possessive
  • True-crime creator Bella Monsoon linked Ethan's alleged behaviour towards Cameron to coercive control seen in close-partner violence cases
  • The Coetzee family previously described Ethan as kind and gentle, disputing any suggestion he was involved in Cameron's death

The brother of Cameron Waldeck-Cooks has publicly responded to reports describing her boyfriend, Ethan Coetzee, as a jealous and controlling partner, weeks after the two St Stithians teenagers were found dead at a self-catering lodge in Mpumalanga in what authorities believe to be a murder-suicide.

Cameron is believed to have died from strangulation or suffocation, while Ethan is reported to have taken his own life. Their bodies were discovered by a family member earlier this month.

Cameron's brother shares TikTok response

The report portrayed Ethan Coetzee, a 2025 matriculant and first-team rugby player, as someone who had unrestricted access to Cameron's phone and social media accounts, and who had allegedly grown "enraged" when she befriended male classmates. He reportedly withdrew his application to study at Stellenbosch University to avoid being apart from her.

Bella described this pattern as coercive control, a recognised feature of close-partner violence. "Jealousy presented as love, possessiveness framed as protection, monitoring disguised as concern and constant access justified with 'If you have nothing to hide, then why does it matter?'" she said in the video.

She added: "Controlling behaviour and excessive jealousy are recognised in research on close partner violence as behaviours that deserve to be taken seriously. A 17-year-old girl's life has been stolen. And her family are not the only family grieving."

Cameron's brother also shared a screenshot of an Instagram post in which he directly accused Ethan of murdering his sister.

Coetzee family disputes the narrative

The emerging portrayal of Ethan Coetzee stands in sharp contrast to how his own family described him.

In a previous statement, the Coetzee family characterised Ethan as "kind, gentle and loyal" and disputed that he was responsible for Cameron's death.

They stated that there was "no sign of an altercation" and that Ethan "sustained no injuries consistent with a struggle." The family also noted that the couple had appeared happy the evening before their bodies were found. A former educator similarly described Ethan as an "amazing young man."
