The body of a 53-year-old man from Scottburgh has been recovered along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline, concluding a multi-day search operation that involved the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and the South African Police Service.
The man's family alerted NSRI Station 39 Rocky Bay on Thursday, 20 August, reporting that he had not returned home the previous day. They indicated he was believed to have gone swimming at Scottburgh Main Beach on Wednesday
Police had already initiated a search before NSRI Rocky Bay volunteers joined the operation.

Body recovered after angler's alert
On Friday morning, the search intensified as NSRI Rocky Bay volunteers joined SAPS and Police Search and Rescue teams in scouring the coastline between Scottburgh and Green Point Lighthouse in Clansthal.
The search took a grim turn when a local angler spotted a body in the shallow surf and alerted the authorities. NSRI crews responded to the location, where Police Search and Rescue recovered the body, believed to be that of the missing Scottburgh man.

The remains were handed over to police and Government Health Forensic Pathology Services. An inquest docket has been opened as authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
NSRI extends condolences
The NSRI conveyed its condolences to the man's family and friends following the recovery.
Scottburgh Main Beach falls within an area well known to the NSRI's Rocky Bay station, which routinely responds to water-related emergencies along the southern KwaZulu-Natal coast.
