Relebohile Mofokeng Warned to Address Shortcoming Ahead of Potential Monaco Transfer

Former Mamelodi Sundowns forward Lebohang Mokoena has urged Relebohile Mofokeng to refine his physical strength if he hopes to thrive overseas.

The young midfielder has attracted interest from foreign clubs over the past two years, with recent reports suggesting that French Ligue 1 outfit AS Monaco are keen to secure his services once the current campaign concludes.

While Mokoena believes Mofokeng—widely known as Rele—should seize the opportunity, he stresses that the 21-year-old must add more physicality to adapt quickly in France or elsewhere in Europe.

“I wouldn’t hesitate to take that chance because Ligue 1 is a strong competition. If I were Rele, I’d be on the next flight to France as soon as the season wraps up,” Mokoena said on SoccerBeat, before highlighting areas for improvement.

Where must Mofokeng improve?

“There’s one key area he needs to address. You could see it in the recent friendly against Panama—his physical presence, particularly in the No.10 position. That’s something Monaco would likely focus on because the game there is very demanding physically.

“On the international stage, players are powerful. In France, centre-backs are tall—around 1.8 to 1.9 metres—so if he strengthens that part of his game, he could slot in perfectly at Monaco.”

The former Pirates winger also expressed hope that Mofokeng secures his long-awaited move abroad, drawing from his own experience of missed opportunities.

Former Pirates star backs Rele for overseas move

“Monaco plays an attractive style and relies heavily on young talent,” Mokoena explained when discussing the club’s suitability for Mofokeng.

“Everyone in South Africa wants to see him take the next step and challenge himself at the highest level. We’ve seen what he can do locally, and if Pirates win the league, he’ll likely be player of the season—it would be the ideal farewell. People have been asking for a while when he’ll get this opportunity, and it can be frustrating.

“I’ve been in that position myself—watching others get moves while you remain behind. It makes you feel like things aren’t going your way. If the offer is right, Pirates should allow him to leave,” added the former Mamelodi Sundowns forward.
