Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Quinton Fortune has shared his views on the intensifying rivalry between Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Orlando Pirates, while also revealing which club he supports.
Fortune, who built his professional career in Europe before representing South Africa at international level, expressed a deep-rooted affection for Kaizer Chiefs, tracing his support back to his childhood.
"Kaizer Chiefs were the team I loved growing up in South Africa," Fortune said. "One of my favourite players as a teenager was Nelson 'Teenage' Dladla, who played for a great Chiefs side."
Sundowns' rise impossible to ignore
Fortune acknowledged that Mamelodi Sundowns have transformed the landscape of South African club football through sustained investment and strategic recruitment, praising the club's infrastructure, foreign coaching appointments, and ability to attract top young talent from across the continent.

"They've always had amazing teams, but now Sundowns are stepping up, putting down the money, and buying the best young players. They recruit from abroad and bring in foreign coaches. I understand their facilities are top-tier. They are champions of Africa — they won the CAF Champions League — and that says it all," he said.
Pirates break the spell
With Orlando Pirates having ended Sundowns' prolonged dominance over the PSL title, Fortune welcomed the shift in the balance of power, describing it as a positive development for the local game.
"Of course, it's not going to be a case of Sundowns winning every single season. I'm glad Pirates broke their spell, but I'm sure Sundowns will regroup and strengthen their squad. They will always be the team to beat, but I still love Chiefs," Fortune said.
He also acknowledged his appreciation for Orlando Pirates, citing the influence of football icon Jomo Sono on his admiration for the club in his formative years.
Despite recognising the quality Sundowns and Pirates have demonstrated in recent seasons, Fortune made no secret of where his heart remains.
"They're my team in South Africa. I grew up watching them for years — and Pirates too, because the great Jomo Sono played for them — but I'm rooting for Chiefs. I hope they can get back to the top," he added.
