Mamelodi Sundowns ended Orlando Pirates' grip on the MTN8 trophy with a commanding 2-0 final victory, raising fresh questions about which of South Africa's two dominant clubs will control the Betway Premiership race this season.
The Buccaneers had lifted the trophy in each of the previous four editions, but Sundowns dismantled that run through goals from Tebogo Mokoena and substitute Iqraam Rayners.

Mokoena broke the deadlock in the 12th minute, converting at close range after Thabang Matuludi picked him out with a backheel assist.
The match remained tense until the closing stages, when Bafana Bafana international Rayners, who came on as a second-half substitute, stepped up to take a penalty in full-time stoppage time.

**Analyst: Sundowns Now Hold the Edge in Title Race**
Football analyst Themba Modise, in an exclusive interview with Briefly News, argued that the cup win could carry significance well beyond the competition itself.
"We all know that Sundowns and Pirates are currently the two best teams in the PSL, as they've both dominated all competitions in the South African league in the last five years," Modise said.
"Sundowns winning this MTN8 Cup has given them the perfect advantage of reclaiming their Betway Premiership crown this campaign after losing it to the Bucs last season."
Modise added that a Pirates victory would have reinforced the Soweto club's belief that they could continue outperforming Sundowns in cup competition. Instead, he believes the balance has now shifted.
"Sundowns are now perfectly placed to win all competitions in the South African league and can add the CAF Champions League to it," he said.
Sundowns relinquished the Betway Premiership title to Pirates last season after a prolonged period of domestic dominance. The MTN8 result marks their first major silverware of the new campaign and sets up what could be an intense title battle between the two clubs as the season progresses.
