Kaizer Chiefs opened their PSL campaign with a 3-1 win over Kruger United, followed by a 2-0 victory against Sekhukhune United, making them one of the early pace-setters in the division. Their only defeat this season came in the MTN8 quarter-final, where Golden Arrows edged them by a single goal.

Sundowns, meanwhile, kicked off their campaign in the MTN8 against Polokwane City, where they came from behind to win 3-2. They carried that same scoreline into their opening PSL match, defeating TS Galaxy. Mkhulise, 30, was among Sundowns' standout performers in the Galaxy fixture, netting twice in the win.
