  • Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando da Cruz spoke out after the Glamour Boys fell to a 2-1 defeat against Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby
  • Da Cruz pointed to missed early chances and what he described as a questionable Pirates goal as key turning points in the match
  • The coach also identified a lack of experience among his young players in the final 20 minutes as a factor that cost Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando da Cruz has expressed frustration after his side squandered a series of early chances and ultimately surrendered the Soweto Derby to Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

Pirates secured a 2-1 victory, with Yanela Mbuthuma and Tshepang Moremi getting on the scoresheet for the Buccaneers. Pule Mmodi netted the solitary goal for Amakhosi, but it was not enough to deny Pirates the bragging rights.

Da Cruz Targets First-Half Missed Chances

Speaking on SuperSport TV after the match, Da Cruz was candid about what he felt went wrong, placing the blame squarely on Chiefs' inability to capitalise when they had the upper hand.

"In the first half, we must have killed this game," the coach said. "Normally, 2-0 or 3-0 because the goal of Pirates, we've seen that it's offside and maybe there was [supposed to be] a red card as well. If we had scored two or three goals, we were going to kill this game."

One of the clearest opportunities fell to Wandile Duba, who found himself in a promising position early in the contest but saw his effort kept out by a brilliant save from Sipho Chaine.

Young Players' Inexperience Punished

Despite acknowledging that Pirates are an experienced and in-form side, Da Cruz did not shy away from identifying shortcomings in his own squad, particularly in the closing stages of the match.

"In the second half, the last 20 minutes, with our young players we lacked experience. They didn't create chances because we have a lack of experience, we gave them chances to score more goals," he said.

The coach, however, struck a measured tone when reflecting on the path forward. "We know where we must improve," he concluded.

The result leaves Chiefs with questions to answer heading into the remainder of the season, with the derby defeat highlighting the gap in composure and clinical finishing that Da Cruz must address if Amakhosi are to challenge for honours.
