Springbok teammates have voiced concerns over Siya Kolisi’s fitness ahead of Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry, with Trevor Nyakane admitting he is personally “a bit worried” about the captain’s chances of featuring against the All Blacks.

Kolisi was forced off after just 24 minutes during South Africa’s victory over Argentina last week after suffering another hamstring injury. The setback came shortly after the 35-year-old returned from a hamstring problem that had ruled him out of the Nations Championship.

“It’s a bit of a concern. You need all your soldiers,” Nyakane said, as reported by SA Rugby Magazine.

Nyakane stressed that his concern was about Kolisi personally rather than the Springboks’ leadership options.

“In terms of the Springboks, I’m not worried. There’s plenty of leaders,” he said.
“But, for him personally, yes, I’m a bit worried. I’d love to see the man doing what he does best in that Greatest Rivalry.”

Nyakane also hoped the problem was not serious.

“Hopefully it’s not that bad. Maybe it’s just a bit of stiffness, and he’ll be able to get back and do what he does best.”

Springboks face decision over captain

Nyakane suggested keeping Kolisi in camp could make sense if he is expected to return during the four-Test series.

“If he’s going to be fit to play but might miss one game – there are four games, after all – I think he still has enough time to return,” he said.

However, he added that missing the entire series could change the situation.

As of Wednesday, 12 August 2026, Siya Kolisi’s recovery timeline is yet to be confirmed.

Deon Fourie recall adds another twist to Siya Kolisi injury saga

Briefly News previously reported that Siya Kolisi’s latest hamstring setback left the Springbok captain facing a nervous wait after he was forced off against Argentina after just 24 minutes. His injury has now triggered another development in the squad, with Rassie Erasmus turning to a vastly experienced veteran.

The surprise return of Deon Fourie comes after the 39-year-old impressed against the All Blacks for the Stormers. His recall adds another layer to South Africa’s selection puzzle as the Springboks prepare to face New Zealand at Ellis Park on 22 August.
