JP Pietersen has given an honest assessment after the Sharks were mauled 54-0 by the All Blacks at Hollywoodbets Kings Park in Durban on Tuesday, 11 August 2026.
New Zealand ran in eight tries to claim a dominant victory, with the Sharks unable to find a response. The hosts were more competitive in the first half but struggled to contain the visitors after the break.
Pietersen admitted the scoreboard made for difficult viewing but praised his players for continuing to compete.
“Look at the scoreboard, it’s not nice to see. But the boys fought from minute one to minute 80,” he said.

According to Rugby365, Pietersen pointed to the difference in pace after half-time.
“We couldn’t match their speed in the second half. We were just behind in everything they did.”
All Blacks expose Sharks’ lack of cohesion
The Sharks trailed 14-0 at half-time before New Zealand accelerated the contest. Pietersen said the All Blacks were sharper at the breakdown and with their offloading, while the Sharks are still only six weeks into pre-season.
The coach also highlighted the youth in his backline, with several players combining for the first time.
“It’s a new combination,” Pietersen said, explaining that cohesion would develop over the coming weeks.

Despite the heavy defeat, Pietersen believes the experience can benefit his young players as they continue their preparations.
He also praised Ma’a Nonu’s influence within the Sharks environment, particularly among the backs.
“He’s been a great addition to us,” Pietersen said.
The Sharks now have several weeks of pre-season remaining to build cohesion, improve game management and learn from a night in which the All Blacks exposed the gap between club rugby and Test-level experience.
