New URC Season Brings Major Change for South African Team Selections

South African teams competing in the United Rugby Championship (URC) will have to reveal their line-ups earlier from the 2026-27 season, with a new announcement deadline set to change the usual build-up to weekend matches. The change means supporters could know the starting XVs considerably sooner than before.
United Rugby Championship introduces new deadline
According to SA Rugby Magazine, all 16 URC clubs will work towards a coordinated Thursday announcement at 2 pm UK time for the new campaign.
That means teams playing on Saturday or Sunday will generally have their selections confirmed 48 hours before kick-off, rather than around 24 hours beforehand.

The URC said:
“Rather than Friday and Saturday teams being announced on separate days, all 16 teams will now work to a coordinated Thursday announcement time.”
The competition also indicated that the earlier announcements would give broadcasters and clubs more time to promote matches and encourage ticket sales.
For Friday fixtures, the announcement process will remain broadly similar.
Rassie Erasmus provides recent selection example
The new rule follows attention drawn to team-announcement timing during the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series between the Springboks and All Blacks.
Rassie Erasmus announced his Springbok team on the Monday before the second Test in Cape Town, before making a late change to his front row.
The Springboks coach cited weather conditions when explaining the decision, with three replacements ultimately starting the match.
Erasmus had also delayed his selection announcement by three days before the previous Test.
However, the URC operates under different competition regulations, meaning its coaches will have to work within the new deadline when the season begins next week.

What the URC change means for South African teams
The earlier deadline could give supporters more certainty before travelling to matches, while broadcasters will have additional time to build their coverage around confirmed selections.
For coaches, however, it also means less room to keep selection decisions under wraps until shortly before kick-off.
With the 2026-27 URC season approaching, South African sides will therefore enter a new era of team-selection transparency, with Thursday becoming an important day for fans following the Bulls, Sharks, Stormers and Lions.
Bulls prepare for demanding 2026/27 URC campaign
Briefly News previously reported that the Vodacom Bulls had assembled a 55-man squad featuring 15 Springboks and eight new recruits ahead of the new URC season.
With their campaign beginning in Parma on 26 September, the Bulls will soon have to balance selection decisions with a demanding schedule that includes domestic clashes and trips to Europe.
