André Esterhuizen responded to a turbulent period surrounding his Springbok captaincy by leading the Sharks to a 26-20 victory over Leinster at Kings Park on Saturday, 3 October 2026. The centre scored in the second half as the Sharks produced a bonus-point win over the defending United Rugby Championship champions.

The result also gave Esterhuizen a strong return to Sharks action after his elevation to Springbok captain had generated renewed scrutiny over a racial incident from his schoolboy days.

Esterhuizen's Springbok captaincy controversy

Esterhuizen was named South Africa's 68th Test captain on 22 September for the Wallabies clash in Perth. The appointment brought renewed attention to an incident from 2012, when the then 18-year-old was found guilty of directing a racial slur at Thabo Molete during a schoolboy rugby match.

He received a one-year suspension, with six months suspended on condition that he completed a life-skills course.

The issue intensified ahead of the Australia Test, with SA Rugby stopping journalists from pursuing questions about the incident at a press conference on 26 September.

Esterhuizen subsequently captained the Springboks against Australia on 27 September, although South Africa suffered a 42-38 defeat in Perth.

Sharks turn the tables on Leinster

A week later, the focus shifted back to club rugby. Leinster opened the scoring through Robbie Henshaw before Manu Tshituka and Lili Bester helped the Sharks establish a 14-7 half-time advantage.

The visitors briefly moved ahead after the restart, but Esterhuizen struck in the 68th minute after receiving a clever offload from Eben Etzebeth. Edwill van der Merwe then intercepted a Leinster pass and raced away to score, giving the Sharks a decisive advantage.

Leinster scored through Andrew Osborne after the final hooter, but it was not enough to deny the Sharks a 26-20 victory.

Sharks face another big test

The win leaves the Sharks unbeaten after two URC rounds. Their next assignment is another South African battle against the Stormers at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday, 10 October.

For Esterhuizen, the match offers another opportunity to keep the attention on what happens between the white lines.

Springboks' transparency questions return after Esterhuizen saga

Briefly News previously reported that André Esterhuizen's appointment as Springbok captain brought renewed attention to a 2012 disciplinary case, with journalists later prevented from questioning him about the matter before the Australia Test.

The decision has since prompted wider questions about how Rassie Erasmus and the Springboks handle difficult issues, especially given the team's reputation for engaging with uncomfortable questions.

The controversy was separate from what happened on the field in Perth, where Australia beat South Africa 42-38.
