Tanzania Mourns as President Samia’s Husband Dies in Hospital

ZANZIBAR — Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, died on Monday, 7 September 2026, while receiving medical care at the Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar.
According to the BBC, Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi confirmed the death, stating that Hassan had been battling a heart condition. He passed away at approximately 8am local time. Funeral arrangements are under way in Kizimkazi, a village in Zanzibar.
Who was Hafidh Ameir Hassan?
Hassan was an agricultural academic who chose to remain largely out of public life despite being at the side of one of Africa's most prominent heads of state. He became Tanzania's first First Gentleman in March 2021, when President Samia was sworn in following the death of President John Magufuli.

The couple had been married since 1978, decades before Samia rose to the presidency. They had four children together, three sons and a daughter. Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, entered public service and currently serves as a member of Zanzibar's House of Representatives.
Throughout President Samia's tenure, Hassan made few public appearances alongside her, preferring a private existence away from the demands of state life.
Regional leaders offer condolences
News of Hassan's death prompted an outpouring of condolence messages from African heads of state.
Kenyan President William Ruto said he received the news with "deep sorrow," extending his sympathies to President Samia and her family.
"President Samia has lost a lifelong companion, her children a beloved father, and Tanzania a distinguished son," Ruto said.
Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema expressed solidarity, saying his country stood with Tanzania during the difficult period. Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye also paid tribute, offering prayers for strength and comfort for the president and her family.
Hassan's death represents a profound personal loss for President Samia, who must now navigate the responsibilities of leading Tanzania's 67 million people while mourning the partner who stood beside her for nearly five decades.

Briefly News also reported that a video surfaced on social media showing Her Excellency, Samia Suluhu of Tanzania, indicating that she has no problem submitting to her husband. The footage sparked interest in people interested to see how one of the most powerful woman in Africa related to her husband. According to president, as part of their roles in a family institution, women are supposed to submit to men as an act of love whilst men also shower their love on them.
